DON’T MAKE GOD YOUR EXCUSE

Luke 11:42 But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every [little] herb, but disregard and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done without leaving the others undone.

In many cases, when priorities are set, one thing moving up a list means another has to move down. Where the list gets so tall, some things eventually fall off the list and are left undone. However, in today’s verse of focus, the summary is “nothing should be left undone”.

So even though Jesus was hard on the Pharisees, with expectations for them to pay attention to love of God and justice, He was clear to add that other things should not be left undone as a result of this change in focus.

To rephrase literally, a focus on the things of God is not an excuse for other areas of our life to crash and this includes finances, social, professional, etc. An example is a student who makes a case that “I was labouring for God and so my studies took a hit”. Jesus’ question to them would be ‘why did you neglect that?’.

We cannot make God the excuse for our failures. From the onset, regardless of how much engaged you are in the matters of the kingdom, it is your responsibility to ensure you allocate resources to other areas of your life. Things may carry different weights, but everything should have its place.
