Why does the same statement mean
different things to different people and elicit diverse reactions?
It is because of the lens through which those words are received. A harmless statement can therefore be perceived as a danger depending on who hears it. This is why King David in Psalms 42:5a launched an inquisition when any emotion arose: “
Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become restless and disturbed within me?"
In other words, should this be my right response to the current situation? Is the choice of emotion appropriate ? Many of us have made it a personal habit and doctrine to make every one but ourselves responsible for our emotional state and individual situations.
We blame our backgrounds, circumstances and systems, forgetting the element of personal choice and responsibility. What have you changed or done differently to expect anything different? You have still not forgiven nor changed your approach to task execution. Your mind is still not transformed, and remains anchored in old foundations. Past experiences remain in front of you, and are the sole lens through which you look even at the present.
So “stop the blame game – you are responsible for the choices you make.” Beyond actions, this includes your choice of emotions because “Your emotions don’t happen to you, you choose them.”
