John 1:48a "How do you know me?” Nathaniel asked.
At a glance, the question asked is one that evokes laughter. Think of it as though coming from a teenager asking their parent who has raised them from birth “how do you know me?” In the text today, it is being asked at an even higher pedestal where the creator is being asked by his creation “how do you know me?”
This question asked by Nathaniel is repeated by each of us in various ways when we ask God: “do you have any idea what I am going through?” We assume in our ignorance that God is equally ignorant.
Yet, the foundation is already set: “
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). Perhaps, not according to same template but enough to present us with a clear idea that there is a blueprint God knows about us.
For your information therefore, God knows enough about you to not be surprised by anything that happens.
