1 Kings 3:5,9 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
There are two kinds of interviews: one kind where interviewees are given the questions beforehand to prepare for, or the more common approach where exact questions are not revealed until the day of interview. It is therefore more common to witness fumblings with responses from interviewees in the latter category.
When anyone is asked the question Solomon was asked “Ask for whatever you want me to give you”, only two responses are likely:
- Either you are taken by surprise and so throw out the first thing that comes to mind or
- You give a perfect answer because the response has been rehearsed and replayed multiple times in your mind.
In the Gospel of Mark (10:51), when Jesus asked blind Bartimaues the question “what do you want me to do for you“, his response, just like Solomon, was immediate; ‘that I may see’. It will therefore take a lot to convince me that Solomon’s answer was unrehearsed. The manner in which his response was given suggested he had been contemplating such a request in his heart and was only waiting for an opportunity to make it known.
So what have been the contemplations in your heart? What questions have you been brooding over? Mind you – not the hate, unforgiveness, revenge or those things you have been worried and anxious about, but the meditations of your heart that are acceptable unto God.
What would your answer have been if the question to Solomon had been thrown to you “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”
