Matthew 20:22 And answering, Jesus said, “You⁺ do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They say to Him, “We are able.”
When requests are made, very often, they are made after thorough contemplation and assessment. A large weighting of the rationale behind requests however lies in its positive potential or what stands to be gained.
In the discourse between Jesus and the mother of the sons of Zebedee, He commented “you have no idea what you’re asking for”. It’s not that she asked an impossible thing, but Jesus pointed out the gap in her request and that was to say ‘You have no idea of the implications of what you are asking for.’
You have not counted the cost component of your request. Perhaps you have only thought about the pros and not the cons, only about what you stand to gain and not what you stand to lose.
In our case, we seek for mantles but have no idea of the contentions that surround it, we want honour but not the responsibilities tied to it, we seek results but not the labour that underlies it. We really have no idea what your asking for. And if you don’t know the value and cost of what you’re asking for, it becomes a risk to trust you with the answer.
