ACCORDING TO HIS WILL

Reference: Mark 10: 33-45
Today’s text of reference is another one that is quite interesting. James and John gather the confidence to make a request to Jesus, and they preface their request with a preamble “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask” (vs 36). That in effect was a request for a blank cheque.

Jesus goes along with this and asks what their request was. They responded “Grant us to sit one at your right hand and one on your left in your glory”(vs 37). To this Jesus said “You do not know what you are asking”(vs 38a)…

In this enterprise of prayer, left to our own devices, we will always miss the mark. We don’t even know what it is we want, and neither are we unaware of the timelines we need them by. On our own, we have nothing but a scattergun approach of trial and error. That is why we have the ministry of the Holy Spirit in prayer.

You can look back and if you have a decent memory, attempt to replay some of the prayers you have made. Then ponder on what would have happened if those prayers were answered exactly as you made them. However, because God is aware that we don’t even know what to ask, he has an allowance that accommodates those limitations. That is why He does not answer every prayer as we want, but according to His will.

‘His will’ contains what is best for us, and that way, we don’t miss out even when our prayer misses the target.
