Peter was bold make a statement a question which preceded a question Jesus discerned and so offered an answer before he completed it. This was the statement “see we have left everything and followed you”(Mark 10:28). That was perhaps a statement many would want to, but dare not make. However, Peter threw it straight at Jesus.
The response he got was equally thought provoking and draws our attention to the reality that “there is an age beyond time”. That was equally our cue and reminder that our actions have implications in time and well beyond time.
The will of God then is for rewards to be received not only in the age to come, but in this time also. The writer to the Hebrews reminds us in this manner “anyone who comes to God, must believe that He is, and is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (11:6)”.
If some rewards are not given in this time, your Christian walk can become a frustrating journey that brings more reproach to the name of the Lord than glory. But the words of Jesus before hinting at rewards present us with a caveat, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother [a]or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, (Mark 10:29)…
And that is: “
Rewards are merited and earned” – they are only given in recognition of specific actions.”
