John 15:8 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
No house stands on nothing. There are always multi-layered building blocks that form the foundation upon which any structure stands. The concluding part of Jesus words today seem the most exciting “you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you”.
At a glance, this is a blank cheque: making any demand with guaranteed fulfilment. However, that will be a short-sighted view because that statement is anchored on the two statements preceding it: “if you abide in me, and my words abide in you”.
The one guarantee we have is God’s absolute faithfulness – that God has exalted his word above Himself (Psalms 138:2). Any man then, even though would seem to have their own desires, the very fact that they abide in the word provides a clue as to their degree of alignment.
Such a man has every desire first, already anchored in Jesus – in His person, and finished work. Then secondly, in the word. Those are two definite sureties – Jesus, in whom every word is yes and Amen, and the word which God has exalted above himself. You could call it a cheat code, but truly, the one who has found a dwelling place in Jesus and has a rich deposit of the word inherent, has found a way to answered requests.
