Acts 11:19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
In the midst of heavy persecution resulting in imprisonment and evidence of martyrdom, the disciples at this time had very valid grounds to dampen their message until things settled down. If for nothing at all, their lives were on the line. However, despite the scattering, they continued to preach the Lord Jesus.
Whenever one is looking for an excuse to change their behaviour, circumstances present a validated excuse to attain this. Yet, the disciples offer to us an opposing school of thought: even though they were scattered because of persecution, their confessions did not change.
Questions to ponder on for us therefore are:
How firmly do our confessions and convictions stand? Do circumstances, contentions and challenges change the tuned we sing? Or are they firmly anchored?
