When we see a wolf attack a flock of sheep, we immediately think prey versus predator. However, today another dimension is introduced that captures our attention.
John 10:2b "Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock."
Sheep by nature, are herd animals so they move in a crowd, often towards the same direction. The assignment of a wolf in such a population is not to simply snatch one and run off, that is too little a goal. As Jesus highlighted in the parable, the wolf’s assignment is to dissipate the herd – break apart that united front into smaller fragments.
Ultimately, that results in fragmented focus, fragmented strength, and a fragmented vision. Sadly, that is what has happened to the body of Christ, and the reason why the enemy is striving so hard to get wolves among the sheep. There are some things intended to be achieved only with a united front, and a scattered flock will never attain them however hard they try.
Among the many things Jesus prayed for in his priestly prayer (John 17:22) therefore was “that they may be one as we are one because:
a scattered flock is a weakened flock.
