DAY 292 OF 365 IN 2021
AS WE WAIT
Luke 12:35 Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning,
When you don’t know when your guest will arrive at your door post, the last thing you want to do is fall asleep while waiting. You might end up missing an important visitor because one was overcome with sleep and could not arise to let them in when they arrived.
Today, we read about about a classic group of people, we can call them “waiting people”. Among the features of waiting people, two are highlighted in the Gospel :
1. They are dressed for action
2. They keep their lamps burning
To be dressed for action means to be dressed for the occasion: it’s okay to be overdressed, but being underdressed or not appropriately dressed could get you kicked out. In extreme cases, you can sustain some very serious injuries. The waiting Christian therefore needs to dressed right- donned the whole armour of God to stand a chance of making it to the arrival of the master.
Burning lamps are also paramount: one cannot let their vicinity be engulfed in darkness especially when they wait for a visitor. They have to remain visible so they can be located. Likewise, the path to their abode has to lit and this process has to be done intentionally.
No lamp will keep burning “just because”, it does because a decision has been made to keep it fuelled.
So as we wait, we ought to think about these: are we dressed for action and are we keeping our lamps burning?
