DAY 290 OF 365 IN 2021

Mark 10:35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

When you make an offer for any purchase, you ought to be in a position where you can expect a counter proposal. This might include the seller requesting for a higher bid or the fulfilment of extra conditions in the terms of purchase. It does appear then that James and John, the key characters in today’s Gospel, did not even acknowledge the existence of such a possibility.

Their words seem even more interesting and daring if looked at a bit closely: ‘we want you to do for us whatever we ask’. It was what “THEY” WANTED, that had to be GRANTED. And their request was not child’s play, since they asked to become the  most influential individuals when Jesus sat in His glory, with a seat on His left hand and right hand.

In other words, their request left no room for negotiation in any form, not even room to hear something that might convince them to think otherwise. Like the brothers, many of us also harbour the desire to be great, and our association with greatness is one way to go. However, just like them too, we expect God to do things on our terms – as we dictate and present them. According to timelines and time scales that fit us.

Beloved, we are encouraged to be bold in approaching the throne of grace for therein we are can receive mercy and grace to help in time of need, but let’s not become unconscious of the fact that ‘God is God’. He isn’t one to be bossed around, blackmailed or forced into doing something just because ‘we want it’
