DAY 46 OF 365 IN 2021

Genesis 4:7 You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
The crouching position is a position for attack. It is a position from which one reduces their centre of gravity to enable significant momentum gain to reach a defined target. Therefore, when one comes across a predator in a crouched position, the instinct is to also assume a defensive stance lest one is overcome without a fight.
In the fight against sin, while the finished work of Christ guarantees victory and forgiveness, our part in the whole equation is often tossed out the door. The word of God spoken to Cain highlights this ‘sin is crouching at your door, but you must become its master’. In effect, you have to rise above it. Your defensive should always be up, your posture and tactics set up in a manner that guarantees victory as the master.
The fact that ‘you must subdue it’ means some effort is clearly required on your part. Not by might, but by His Spirit. However, the quickening that comes is so you are placed in a position to make decisions and choices that keep you above sin. For whatever you submit to, you become a slave of – hence God’s explicit warning that we stay as masters.
However, every now and then, roles are reversed and we lose our status as masters. But ‘if’ we do sin, we have an advocate already with the father(1 Jn 2:1), to obtain forgiveness and be restored to our status as masters. In Hebrews 12:4, we read ‘In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood’; thus regardless of where you are, there is still room to do more until we are made perfect as He is perfect.
