1 John 2:14b I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Reminders serve as a timely and consistent message about what needs to be done and where we stand with it. However, every now and then, who we are as a people and what we possess as a heritage, amongst a few others fall through the cracks. Our extreme familiarity causes us to lose sight of the importance of reminders in our lives.
John therefore serves as a reminder to audience he addresses.
He reminds them that they are strong and that they have overcome. One would expect that an individual would be able to know the strength behind their own punches; that one would be able to keep track of their achievements, but that seemed far based on today’s scenario.
Beloved, every now and then therefore, it appears we need to remind and be reminded. This is because when we become so familiar with systems, we sometimes become limited only to the most used functions. We thus need external eyes to see and hands to nudge us towards realising that other functions exist, and that we are actually capable of doing more.
Let us then become reminders and also allow ourselves to be reminded of our strengths and what we have overcome. Not because we are sufficient in ourselves, but because our sufficiency is of God.
