Luke 1:60 And his mother Elizabeth answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
As a reference point: Over the course of the year, there have been massive protests worldwide by activists to call government to action about climate change. In London, some protesters went as far as gluing themselves to trains and buses. Others even boarded airlines to prevent take off, actions deemed dangerous and inconsiderate by some. On many accounts, their actions spoke more about what they stood against rather than what they stood for.
But as we read today, at the naming ceremony of Elizabeth’s son, it isn’t that she was against the name proposed; besides, her husband was called Zechariah. The real reason was that she stood for ANOTHER NAME which God had proposed: ‘He shall be called John’. And that is what she presented.
Her interaction with her neighbours was not a risk analysis process nor a debate where arguments were needed to choose a winning pitch. Therefore, Elizabeth had no time to make a case for why she was was opposed to the proposed name, she only highlighted what she stood for. However, on many occasions, we spend too much of our time emphasising all the things we are AGAINST instead of what we STAND FOR.
Beloved, if you know what you stand for, what you are against needs not become a central conversation topic because, it will stand out on its own. Just live out what you stand for- for Christ.
