THE LAW WAS NEVER THE DESTINATION

Galatians 3:24-26 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Paul described the law using a word translated in various forms as “tutor”, “guardian” or even “school master”. Yet, in context, the root word used described the role of a slave who was tasked with escorting, disciplining and instilling morals into a young child until they reached maturity.

Therefore, we can say that the law was never the destination, it was to serve as the midwife to the intended destination, Jesus. The law was therefore tasked with delivering us into the hands of Jesus. But this is where we can get lax because while the law had strict borders, boundaries and zero flexibility, our new destination in Christ is one where we have access to mercy.

Yet, a wrong perception of mercy can make one lascivious – where we can get comfortable with stepping outside boundaries because mercy abounds. We have become children of God, but Christ is the first born. Our assignment therefore is this: as we have now been delivered to Jesus, let us stay clinging to Him.
