LIMITED OR NOT?

Reference text: Ezekiel 28:1-10

In the pride of your heart you say, “I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.”But you are a mere mortal and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god (verse 1)

Limits such as word count, maximum or minimum values etc, are often incorporated within systems and structures to act primarily as checks. The ignorance or awareness of this has a two-fold contrasting impact:

1. Daring to expanding
Awareness of upper limits or ceilings can affect how high one dares to jump or how far to widen their territory. Potential is often capped when consciousness of limits are fully adopted. So very often, pioneers may have to break through existing limits.

2. Expanding beyond capacity
There is the story of Icarus who ignored warnings to not fly to close to the sun as he was using wings made of feathers held together by wax. We can also ignore limits, and pay the price when we overestimate our capacity.

The king of Tyre, who is at the centre of today’s text, fell into the second category where he thought himself ‘a god’, forgetting his limits as man. His judgement was intended to make him aware of this reality.

For us therefore, our message is to be aware that we are men and have limitations. However, an even higher consciousness is to acknowledge that those same men can partner with God to do exploits and scale past limits our humanity would have pegged us at.
