THE SEEING MUST LEAD THE SEEING

Matthew 15:14 Leave them alone; they are blind guides of blind people. And if a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

Unless there is a perfect alignment of circumstances, when the blind leads the blind, only one outcome is likely which has been stated – ‘both leader and follower fall into a pit’. However, other pairings are possible: ‘the seeing leading the blind’ , and ‘the blind leading the seeing’.

In the first scenario, the blind followers would best hope their seeing leader knows where they are heading. And for the seeing followers, they had better hope that their blind leader was teachable enough to listen to their voice from behind when they see the pit coming up.

In the absence of vision/foresight and teachability, what reigns are comfort and pride. As far as movement in today’s context goes therefore, the outcome is likely “they end up in a pit”. The ideal scenario therefore remains “the seeing must lead the seeing”. You may deem this inflexible, but it may be non-negotiable.

The example of the Berean Christians comes to mind because they were not ‘blind followers’. They would go out and search the scripture themselves hence were less likely to take everything they had been told line, hook and sinker. You simply cannot lead blind, and neither should you be led by a blind guide. In fact, you should ensure that whoever you are following, can see.
