Jeremiah 15:19 Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
The word “turn” sits at the crux of today’s discourse. In simple terms, it simply means to change course or direction. However, in the context of our text today, that turn denotes more than just a change in direction. The prophet Jeremiah is given a charge by God : ‘the people must turn to you and not the other way round’.
In other words, God was saying because you have come to know me, embraced my ways and built firm convictions though my dealings with you, your assignment is to get the people to change direction from where they are headed, in their disobedience to turn towards where you are headed. You should influence them, but under no circumstance should you allow them steer you off your current course.
Sadly, that has been the story of many. In their attempt to change their world, they have been swallowed up whole by that world. They forgot that they were in the world but not of the world hence the calamity. If you do not really watch it, your genuine attempt to get others to turn to God might pull you too much into a space where you end up turned away from God towards the world.
This won’t happen overnight, it could take decades of subtle reprogramming, small compromises, simple half truths and doubts. Before you realise, you would have done a 180 degree turn. Today, therefore, bear in mind’
you are to change your world, not the other way round. So be conscious that the world you seek to change, also seeks to swallow you whole.
