Deuteronomy 7:6-7 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples
Entitlement is an inherent belief that one deserves special privileges. This often comes up as a result of status, contribution or actions which ought to raise one’s profile to a point of being singled out for celebration. Yet, the question “why did this happen to me” is one that sets us on a course of many unknowns.
Whether then outcomes are positive or not, thus draws our attention to other matters. Israel today was being reminded that they weren’t chosen because they were any more special than other nations. The profound investment of God in their midst was therefore not the result of an earned pursuit, rather because God simply chose them.
He didn’t need to consult any man, nor did he need a consensus. In His sovereignty, He made His choice. There are times when you may look at the lives of others and it seems that they have “bribed the Lord”. Their level of mastery, the results they command, and their influence, makes it seem unfair when juxtaposed with peers.
This is extended on the cross to all when nothing we could have done would have ever made us qualified enough to merit God’s love. Instead, He simply chose us. That will always be difficult to explain because the only reason we get is ‘because the Lord loved us’.
