John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
If you were to ask ten people “what is the best recipe for fried rice?”, with the exception of rice as the unifying ingredient, you are very likely to get ten different combination of ingredients and cooking techniques.
In other words, from the perspective of men, there are very many ways to arrive at outcomes. So when an individual rigidly expects things to be done only in a specific manner and sequence, they are likely to set others off the wrong way.
However, as far as loving one another goes, we are not permitted to do so as we wish. Instead, we are given a blueprint “As I have loved you”. That is a command. Our love will therefore be missing many key ingredients if it is fashioned after any other template but that.
Let me rephrase this “you are not permitted to love any other way, but only after the manner in which Christ has loved us”. That is indeed a tough act to follow, but, it is so because ‘God is love’ and no one understands love like He does.
