Before Stephen was stoned, the action of the crowd was significant:
"At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him" (Acts 7:57).
Their first action was to plug their ears from hearing. Because if faith comes by hearing, that faculty had to be cut off to sustain unbelief. Secondly, they shouted at the top of their voices – they generated an external sound intending to drown out the voice of their consciences. Thirdly, they rushed at him. That was indicative of an action they did not want to stop to reconsider. The faster it was done, the easier it would be.
What have you plugged your ears to? The word of God? Good counsel? Or Guidance on resources and actions? What sounds are you drowning out with noise? And what actions are you so in a hurry to execute that you are ignoring all red flags to halt.
So we see artificial deafness, distractive noise and undue haste, as the core hallmarks of this narrative. These are seemingly small things that have very weighty in terms of impact.
