Jeremiah 17:8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought
Left to us alone, our prayers would always result in the fulfilment of the words ‘goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our life’ and we shall be joyful in and out of season’. By preference therefore, we would rather seasons of trials and discomfort not find their way near our borders.
Yet, we are provided with a near guarantee in the word of God that such a position isn’t one we can avoid. It is certain that we will find ourselves in situations that will squeeze us. In fact, the word used in our text today is “when heat comes”. Not if or per chance, but when it comes.
We are often taken aback when the things we do not expect happen to us, much like how an unexpected kick can knock a fighter out. We ought to have at the back of our minds that heat will come, because that becomes the reason to trust in the Lord and make him your trust. So that your leaves stay evergreen and the days of heat and drought do not come at you like a bolt out of the blue.
