BUT BEWARE OF MEN
Matthew 10:17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
We can use this scripture as a basis for the statement ‘Trust nobody – all men will betray’. And why would we be right in using this scripture as basis? Because Jesus gives us valid reasons to. It is the people around us who may betray and break our trust, or create problems not just for us, but for all of society. It is the same people who will discourage and execute all manner of atrocities. So Yes, trust nobody.
However, while we can perpetuate this argument to a large extent, there is another side to the coin: ‘the solutions to the problems created by people, are also hidden in people’. So while others betray, another will win your trust. While others generate problems, some work out solutions. In effect, God places in men the capacity to answer the questions to problems that occur at the hands of men.
Thus, our default posture should not be skewed to one side. Rather, we are invited to be ‘discerning’. We read these words in the first letter of John ”try all spirits'(4:1) and in Job 32:8 ‘there is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth understanding’ (Job 32:8). So in every man therefore, is a spirit to be also discerned.
We each have to do such discerning intentionally because we have a say in who makes their way into our inner circles.
