A LESSON IN HUMILITY
146/365
Luke 1:39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah,
The Mary being described is the same Mary whom a verse earlier, had just received news that she was going to conceive and bear a son who shall be called the son of God. Barring the fact that she was young and unmarried, that news to anyone would be like winning a lottery ticket worth billions.
She had every reason then to become proud, sit, cross her legs and be waited on. She could equally have sung the chorus of the rich man ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” (Luke 12:19). You carry the son of God!
Instead, we find her hastily rushing into the hill country to offer her service to Elizabeth. That is a lesson in humility further emphasised in her interactions with Elizabeth ‘ He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;’ (vs 51).
Mary had come to understand the place of humility because even far from simply being of service, it also offered an opportunity to observe and learn from Elizabeth how to do things when her due time also came. Those lessons would have come in handy when we ponder on where and when Jesus was born.
Mary’s actions today, deliver a master class on humility, a trait we should desire to have in our tools for living.
