THE PEACE OF GOD
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
It is interesting that there is a gradation of peace at different levels because what Jesus communicates in the words of today’s scripture is this “not all peace is the same”. That, is something to ponder on.
He uses the world’s peace as the basis for this argument and this has been the question on my mind all afternoon- “what does the world’s peace look like?” This the peace which has conditions with it- present depending on what you have and how much of it, where you are in life and what things are within your sphere of influence. It is a peace very dependent on many other things.
That which Jesus leaves, is like all of his gifts – ‘available as long as you desire to receive’. Your yes is the only impeding factor. A version of scripture reads so ‘I’m leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart! And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives.
Two tell-tale signs then of the Peace of God that should prompt us to layhold of it- its permanency as long as one says Yes, and the fact that it abides regardless of what story our circumstances seem to present.
