Other renditions try to tone down the devastation Paul was doing to the church with the use of words like ‘ Saul was persecuting, trying to destroy or cruelly harassing the church. Yet, it seems the impact of his dealings did go a lot further and scripture does not mince words with the harshest rendition using the words ‘

Saul made havoc of the church entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison (Acts 8:3)

That was absolute intention for widespread destruction and laying waste, with the ultimate goal to eliminate.

We find similarity to the words Joseph spoke to his brothers in Genesis (50:20) ‘you intended it for evil, but God meant it for good’. That is the encouragement for us today- 

with God, we can expect the best even out of what looks the worse.
