Scripture could have said ‘the first commandment is this, love the Lord your God’; because on many occasions, such expression would suffice. However, there is a step further in expressing the four dimensions in which love for God ought to be present. This is the verse we read as Jesus’ answer to the scribe:
"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment."(Mark 12:30)
For the first time, I was surprised by the multiple dimensions expressed as I thought that love for God would be alright outside any boundaries. In fact, those separations serve as nothing more than divisors. However, an alternative rendition of the verse which came to mind as I reflected on it was “Love the Lord with conviction, with passion, with understanding and in with action.
Paul also highlights four dimensions in his letter to the Ephesians in which he wrote:” that you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love”. Harder Work? Yes, if we are to take conscious note of all the dimensions involved. However, if any of the four is left out, what remains is a lopsided imbalance in our dealings with Him and a missing out of a facet of Him.
