DAY 146 OF 365 IN 2021
Mark 10:37-38 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”
James and his brother John, came up to Jesus and made a request, offering him no alternative but to say Yes. Their introductory remarks were ‘we want you to do for you whatever we ask. To their bold request after, Jesus declares’ you have no idea what you’re asking for, and those words were meant to sound literally as we read ‘you have no idea what you are asking’.
It would seem to suggest then that these men had not weighed the full gravity of what it meant to ask for what that which they desired. In our situation where we have largely become a people of ‘asking and wanting’, we want wealth, health, influence and power. We seek recognition, attention, and appreciation. The one question we do not really ponder much on is if we possess the capacity to bear the crown that we want to wear, if we are able to cater for the entourage that follows that crown.
Beloved, have you judged to see if you possess the capacity to nurture what you desire? Have you developed the endurance to keep journeying saying ‘God I trust you’ in the face of life’s laughter? Or are we like James and John about whom Jesus would accurately say ‘You have no idea what you’re asking’
