Acts 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

Teaching can simply be considered as the impartation of knowledge. On that basis, it is founded and dependent to a large extent on the knowledge base of the one who imparts. If this knowledge is complete, listeners receive it whole and if inadequate, evidence of gaps and missing pieces become evident.

Apollo was considered well vexed in scripture, ‘an authority on the scripture’, as some versions put it. Thus, from that point of view, he was an expert. Nonetheless, he only knew part about the way of the Lord, specifically the baptism of John; and that was his reference point. So although Aquilla and Priscilla heard him speak boldly and eloquently, they still knew something was missing and so took him home to fill that in.

We are not told how they approached him, but as companions of Paul, it was evident they had witnessed many things and many dimensions in their walk with the Lord. Therefore, it is possible that they offered the message ‘Apollo, there is more to know if you desire to’. Seeing as there is no resistance, it became clear that a receptive Apollo was open to knowing more, and he was taught accordingly.

Beloved, when hunger meets knowledge, an ideal environment is set up for impartation. However, it is important that we pay attention to what we hunger for and what we are have to impart because

‘when the wrong impartation is done, individuals are empowered to act in a manner that neither honours God, nor positively affect the lives of those around them’ .
