Jonah 3:9 Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
When we operate on a trial and error system, then there is no conviction in what we do. We operate by guess work – who knows, perhaps and maybe. The king of Nineveh and his people had genuine reasons for ‘trying their luck’ because truth is they did not know exactly what the reaction of God to their repentance in sackcloth would be. But they tried it out sincerely and it paid off.
Now, however, we operate under a different ‘economic structure. We have a lot more information at our disposal which makes any decision to apply trial and error unnecessary because ‘we know the outcome of each and every situation’. We know that if we truly repent, we will be forgiven; we know that if we ask, seek and knock, we will receive, find and have the door opened to us.
My dear, the kind of conviction used in knocking a door with the expectation of having it opened to us is very different from when we are unsure of the outcome when we don’t know. WE KNOW and so have to operate accordingly-as people with knowledge not the proponents of trial and error.
