Reference text: Matthew 9:14-15
Matthew 9:14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?
The disciples of John have a concern today: they sought to query why they fasted with the Pharisees as often as was required, but Jesus’ disciples did not? In times like this, one may wonder which face of Jesus will show: the one who answers questions plainly and clearly, or the one who leads others to figure out answers on their own accord? The former showed up in today’s text.
His response, when paraphrased was rather straightforward ‘because their situation in different from yours’. That was it! Plain and simple. If you are wondering why someone only bursts into praise, why another lies prostrate in worship or is strategically positioned to do warfare, it is because their situation demands that.
You cannot force the hand of everybody to tow the line that you do because you are not positioned in the same season as they are. The demands and requirements of each person’s reality is unique- the time for your fast, may be the time time for another to praise and rejoice. The time for your battles, may be the time for someone else to worship.
But life is a cycle, constantly in rotation and the tables will spin, translating you and everybody else to different positions with new demands required. So do not expect everyone to be responding or reacting to the seasons they find themselves in, the same way you are. Their requirements and time line is different from yours.
