YOU MAY NOT BE THE FIRST

Reference text: Luke 6:1-5

Luke 6:3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

When any sports person wants to break a particular record or reach specific heights in their game, conscious effort is put in place to study the techniques, approaches and styles of those who have walked the paths before them.

When the Pharisees approached Jesus questioning why his disciples were ‘harvesting’ grain on the sabbath, he pointed them to the example of King David and his men. In that story, David ate the show bread meant for only priests. Even though this can be seen as a shadow of the substance that we are all priests before God, those actions were unlawful.

Yet, it is the redirection towards an existing example that catches my attention. New things emerge every now and then, and while some are born out of a brand new spark, many built on the foundation of already existing products. It will be disappointing to think one has come up with something new only to realise ‘this has always being only we didn’t know’.

Beloved, it is very possible that where you want to go is a place someone has already arrived at. Those targets, records or achievements which you are busily chasing may currently be in the name of another. But do you know who or how they got there? In our time, it is becoming increasingly easier to find out and read about the exploits of others to guide our steps. But how seriously do we take these opportunities?

You may not be the first set on that road so get asking.
