Reference text: Matthew 19:16-22
Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
Recently, I participated in a bid for a bike and to do so, I set the highest amount I was willing to pay for it as the cap. Thus, any bids beyond that and I was out but I won with some room to spare on my cap. Normally, when a person walks away from a deal, it could be due to a number of reasons. Notably, one of two financial reasons can be considered- either the long term profitability can not be guaranteed or the initial financial outlay exceeds their intended budget.
The man who spoke to Jesus today, walked away without a deal because the terms offered did not sound good enough. Simply put, the cost involved was more than he was ready to bear for Jesus had requested that he sell ALL he had and come follow, a price he deemed too steep to pay. Thus, he walked away sad, not just because he was wealthy, but because he missed out on what he set out to do- to gain eternal life.
Beloved, there is a cost involved in everything, everything comes at a price. Maybe not monetary, but something has to be put on the table; something you have to be ready and willing to part with. So there is one question to ponder on and to attempt to find an answer to today:
‘You may know what you want, but are you ready to pay the price to have it?
