In Phillipians chapter 2:5-11, we read a coronation service:
“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (vs 9-11)
The scene captured above is one of exaltation, and rejoicing. However, we cannot ignore the scene immediately preceding: ‘And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.'(vs 8)
Thus, the price of ‘therefore God has exalted him’ was ‘obedience unto death’. Yet, many of us will focus solely on the coronation and not the journey to the throne. We will not see the scars, the tears, the sacrifices, or the pain.
For Jesus, the cross, the nail pierced hands and the spear-pierced sides were the scars that led to the throne. So before you go on celebrating or complaining about the crown on someone’s head, look past the crown and explore the story leading to the throne.
Don’t just look at the beauty of the crown, consider the weight of the cross.
