CONCRETE EVIDENCE OR NOT?

Luke 10:25-37 – The Good Samaritan

Reading this parable again today, I realized that story is incomplete. At least, I have one lingering question unanswered: did the Samaritan return to the inn? The answer to this is crucial because it provides concrete evidence. However, the fact that this detail is left out points our attention to the definition of faith captured in Hebrews 11 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen” .

Because look at this scenario: both the  Samaritan and the innkeeper were operating with faith and trust, both expected to cash out cheques they did not have. The Samaritan was trusting the innkeeper to do a job they had not been paid for, while the innkeeper was expecting the Samaritan to return to make payment for a service they did not know would be delivered.

That is trust. In either case, the only way for either to be sure is to uphold your end of the deal. Only a return to the inn would answer this question. Hence, why God is called faithful, because whether in the shoes of the Samaritan or the innkeeper, He will be true to his word. So as the injured man figuratively, we can simply stay trusting that all will be well.
