ALWAYS PREPARED FOR DEFENCE

If you woke a soldier up from sleep, placed a familiar weapon in their hand and shouted enemies on the horizon, they would jump straight into action as though on autopilot because that has become a trained response. They have performed this so many times that it may not require any new learning to execute.

The same is true when a doctor or any professional is “on call”. It describes a state of perpetual alertness and readiness to spring into action on first notice with responses often expected within minutes to a few hours. That is surely not the time to be acquiring new knowledge, especially when lives are literally on the line. It is a period for execution.

Thus, Saint Peter in today’s letter stated  “that it was required for the believer  “Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. But respond with gentleness and respect,” (1 Peter 3:15).

We often don’t consider that as a core feature in our walk, but in the current age where information is available on our finger tips, that charge couldn’t be even more profound. If you do not become so anchored in what you believe, enough to make a firm case for it, you could be convinced out of it. That is why you have to be prepared ahead of time.
