A counsellor’s task is not always to tell the counsellee what to do explicitly, it is to listen and guide the decision making process often through thought-provoking dialogue. Because mind you, people don’t really simply follow all you tell them, they begin from a personal opinion and conviction which they refine as they go along.
When John sent his disciples to Jesus, they were sent with a question: “are you the one who is to come or shall we look forward to another?” That was John’s dilemma. Jesus’ response was “go and tell him what you see and hear”. In other words, I cannot give him the answer he seeks, that answer has to be deduced. He ought to come to that conclusion himself
Similarly to Thomas’ confession “my Lord and my God” or Peter’s declaration “you are the Christ, the son of God” ; John had to arrive at his own conclusions on the basis of the results and information his disciples presented to him after meeting Jesus.
Your convictions should be birthed out of your partnership with the Holy spirit, and your use of the information presented to you to draw wisdom-based conclusions and make choices consistent with the Word and the will of God. Here is the drill
“however well intentioned, once others form your convictions for you, you will struggle to keep those convictions.
