A BURNING BUSH AND A CONSUMING FIRE

Deuteronomy 4:34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

As Christians with some knowledge of the nature and person of God, we are often comfortable with Him because as sons and daughters, we have been welcomed into his love as father, and have become recipients of his mercy. His benevolence and compassion have become such a free gift to us, flowing down unhindered. Therefore, we bask in it.

However, the story is different for those who stand against God. Such encounter a God so different that one may wonder if He was the very same. When an inheritance is promised, a purpose has been birthed and a mission set into motion, God rises as a strong one, as a fearsome warrior.

You may ask “How far will He go?”. The answer lies in the text we read today: ‘As far as is required to drive out nations mightier and stronger than you. With a mighty hand, an outstretched arm, and great deeds of terror. Many have encountered God as a burning bush, but many forget that he is a consuming fire.

Where his integrity and sovereignty are queried, He arises.
