Reference text: John 1:19-23
When you show someone a book, asking the question “what is this”, until they respond with ‘that is a book’ you keep pressing for a response. This is true especially when you are convinced they ought to know the answer. Answers along the lines of ‘it is not a chair’ simply does not suffice when the item in question is a book.
It should therefore be no real surprise that those sent to John kept pestering him on multiple occasions to answer the question “who are you?” It took three renditions of ‘I am not’ before he spoke the words ‘I am the voice… “
Here is a misconception many often run with, that knowing what something is not, can fill the place for knowing what it is. Substitution does not work in this context, especially where the question of knowledge is pursued. Of note, John had an ‘I am sentence’Ā to answer the question of ‘who are you. So it’s our turn:’ without running through a list of who or what you are not, who are you?
Remember # Knowing what something is not, isn’t the equivalent of knowing what it is.
