It is often asked which version of scripture is best to be read. Choice often depends on the reason for reading: whether for historical accuracy, ease of understanding, or even availability. But there are times when you just need to hear the words in simple terms, as a friend may speak to you. Today’s Psalm is therefore best read in simple language:
"Look at us with a smile on your face. Then we will be safe"(Ps 80:19b)
Every now and again, we seem to wander off track that we fear to look up to God. We assume the posture that he doesn’t dare look at us. We are reminded in such moments that He turned his back to Jesus on the cross, so He could turn His face towards us.
God’s face turned towards us, radiating with joy is our reminder of his goodwill and favour. It is a revelation of the warmth of His love. Beloved,Â
the shout of the king is a battle cry, but the smile of a king is a seal of approval.
So I pray for you, as in Numbers 6:25: “May the Lord smile at you”.
