ENGAGE YOUR CURIOSITY

Reference text: Luke 1:26-39

In today’s Gospel, we see Mary in three phases:
1. A troubled Mary (vs 29)
2. A questioning/curious Mary (vs 34)
3. An accepting Mary (vs 38)

The first version of Mary had just encountered a strange salutation from the angel Gabriel. Words so heavy that they are enough to cause anyone to take a step back to reassess what they heard.

In phase two, we encounter a curious and questioning Mary. One who had now dropped the initial shock, and clarified the strategy by which things were going to be executed. Hence, the most dominant question in this phase was ‘how can this be?’

Then comes phase three, the Mary who had come to full realization and acceptance as we see in the words “I am the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word”

What was the difference between these three version of the same individual across the verses? The answer was “information”. As we read the verses today, we realise that with each subsequent verse, Mary received more detail and clarity, ultimately resulting in her understanding of what had been communicated.

Every information that comes with understanding has the potential to dispel fear, and allow one to better align with a cause. So the pursuit of knowledge, often through curiosity and seeking, should be a part of our lives. That makes our understanding fruitful, and our alignment more sure.
