THE DUTY OF ALL MEN

When an individual applies for a job, there is often a specification which accompanies the role. This document should detail expectations, responsibilities, targets and often times, a reward system. Inherently therefore, accompanying all duties are a reward setup that in an ideal case, matches up to the expected duties.

It may therefore appear strange for such an individual to go on seeking more reward for doing exactly what was required of them from the very start. Thus, we get further context into Jesus’ words to his disciples when servants carry out the requirements of their role

"So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say,‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.”(Luke 17:10)

So what is the duty of man? This was the question that came to mind this morning. Beyond the day to day responsibilities we bear towards family, career, and society, what is the duty of man? Ecclesiastes 12:13 was the verse which followed ” Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God,[worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

All other duties indeed, will arise from a fulfilment of this duty, because the greatest command to love God and neighbour, is an offspring of this duty. So the whole duty of all men is summed up to us “fear God and keep His commands” – and yes, God is not unjust, He is also a rewarder (Heb 11:6).
