DAY 347

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Before a person makes any commitment, it is prudent to search their own reserve to determine if they possess the capacity to fulfil it. Where they are unsure, they often hedge their bets with words of probability such as ‘may, can, might, or could’. It takes real knowledge of ability, and commitment to use ‘shall and will’, the definitive alternatives.
Thus, as Jesus spoke today, His words were those of one who understood his office and the ability He wielded through it. Hence, He could guarantee the promise made when he said ‘I will give you rest’. However, even though this guarantee is made, a caveat to secure it is presented ‘come to me’.
To make the decision to ‘come to Jesus’ primarily stems out of an acknowledgement that one needs something they cannot attain on their own. It is an acknowledgement of insufficiency, hence it is a decision that many always struggle to make. Consequently, many stay with heavy weights and continue in hard labour because they won’t dare to acknowledge their need for help.
There are times when help is available all round about, but people will struggle on in their pride instead of reaching out for help because they think the latter is cowardice and a show of weakness. The truth is simplier: there are many things you cannot and will not be able to do on your own. If you don’t come unto Him, that guaranteed rest will continue to evade you.
