MORE THAN MINIMUM

DAY 251

Matthew 1:5 Salmon was the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed was the father of Jesse.

When men are honoured, others sometimes become angry and question ‘what they did to be honoured so?’ Although a valid question, it often originates from a place of limited knowledge and understanding, or is even fueled by jealousy. In the Genealogy of Jesus, two none Israelite women are named in the same verse: “Rahab and Ruth”.

Rahab is described in Joshua 2 as a prostitute who somehow found herself entangled in a game of spies. Although strangers to her, she discerned and so hid them to preserve their lives when they were being sought in Jericho. Ruth on the other hand was the Moabite daughter-in-law of Naomi. When her husband, the only link to Naomi died,  she wasn’t obligated to stay, but she did.

Both women ‘did things they didn’t have to’, but in doing so, their names got etched as a permanent memorial, even in the Genealogy of Jesus. There are times when the scope of competency means ones hands are tied, but there are others whom although competent and capable, will only do the very minimum expected.

Beloved,
