THE WALL AND THE WATCHMEN

DAY 156

Mark 12:1 Then He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away.

When I read the text today, my mind was cast to one question ‘the man in the Gospel had made sure to build a wall around the vineyard, yet he also built a watchtower. If there was a wall, why was there a need for a watchtower?

The words of Isaiah 62:1 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent,

Walls are built on the basis of available resources, perceivable dangers, and architectural design. On that basis, they are able to keep out only certain kinds of intruders. Anyone who finds the right tools therefore, can scale any wall. Therefore, if you rely solely on your walls, it might be the equivalent of sleeping with your door wide open.

A watchman on the wall is placed to be the eyes for anything new, any new   advance that has capabilities to scale  every existing wall. Therefore, let us not forget to build and stand on our watchtowers, lest our walls around our lives get breached because there were no watchmen.

  1. Hello There
Interesting observation about the man in the Gospel building both a wall and a watchtower. It raises questions about the purpose and effectiveness of each in protecting the vineyard. The quote from Isaiah also adds another layer of meaning to the concept of watchmen.
