LEARN TO DO GOOD

DAY 66

Isaiah 1:16-17b “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice,

There is always this conversation going on about innate ability and things that one learns how to do because we are not born with. Topics like leadership, musical prowess, intelligence are key areas where this conversation has gained the most ground.

Today however, another pair of areas enter the frame of this conversation: good and evil. As man is created in the image and likeness of God, it would seem adequate to say that ‘because God is goodness, the same should apply to us’. Yet, we would soon realise that we have God’s image, but to function like Him in likeness is not automated. It is a consciousness that has to be developed.

Therefore, the words of today’s text send out loud bells ‘cease to do evil, learn to good’. We must consciously mould our life along the lines of goodness, resisting the devil and the evil that comes with it. Instead, we ought to learn to do good- through the Word, intimacy in prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

If it were an automated process, all men would simply be good because goodness is God’s nature which we share. However, in man, this goodness has to be learnt, understood and then cultivated. You won’t become good just because, you have to learn to do good. And the sum of your choices will reflect this desire.
