ASK WHY

DAY 55

The questions of life are often answered in layers. The word which opens the question determines the nature of the response one receives. The question word used in today’s text is ‘why’ hence the question posed to Jesus: ‘why do the Pharisees fast but your disciples do not? (Matthew 9:14)

It is very likely that those who asked this question had an opinion in mind, a reason they could attribute to this outcome. Nonetheless, they asked why?

“Why” is a word that opens the door to clarification because it solicits a rationale for action. Whenever we begin to ask others ‘why’, we assume a posture which suggests a willingness to see things from another’s point of view. We set a platform for healthy debate and minimise the chances of misunderstanding. That is how false beliefs or wrong habits become strongholds- in the absence of clarification.

You could sit in your own corner and form an opinion about a person or a matter on the sole basis of what you have seen or heard- but have you dared to ask them why?
