IN THE HANDS OF THE MAKER

356/365

1 Samuel 1:27-28 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.” So they worshiped the Lord there.

Whenever we pray for something, God answers us and we are given that which we ask for. This was Hannah’s story when she returned with young Samuel to shiloh. However, there is a message impressed on my heart when her words are delved into a bit more closely: ‘the Lord has granted  me my petition, therefore, I have also lent him to the Lord’.

Hannah’s prayer and the actions that followed is one of the hardest to do: To take what you have been given after earnestly asking and offer it back to the one who gave it to you. It’s much like taking our gifts, potentials, wealth, resources [all of which we have been given] and to place them back in the hands of God to do with them as He wills.

Hannah surely loved Samuel and he would have become a fine young man with her mother’s nurturing. But she knew how much better he would be if left in the hands of his maker. And through his life, we read he was a man whose word never fell to the ground. That is the description of what happens when what God has given, is given back to Him.
