Luke 21:34-35 Watch out! Don’t let my sudden coming catch you unawares; don’t let me find you living in careless ease, carousing and drinking, and occupied with the problems of this life, like all the rest of the world
Alternative introductions to today’s verse are ‘Be on your guard! Be careful! Take Care! All are a call to action – an invitation to maintain an amount of level headedness and concentration. Why? Because a day comes that we do not want to catch us unawares. And by extension, we just cannot afford to let some days [situations, encounters, and opportunities ] like that catch us off guard.
Picture a vehicle belting down the highway at high speed – should the driver dose off at the wheel or take their eyes of the road even for a brief moment, that could mark the point of a big disaster. So in the message version of this text, there is another clause ‘don’t take you hands off the wheel’.
This is why: ‘When you get distracted, things will sneak up on you and for some days, it’s good if you could see them coming from miles ahead, even better if you can prepare for them adequately’. Therefore, a reminder once again ‘Be on your guard and become overburdened with certain cares that you become distracted from the things that actually do matter.
